Exogenous ketones in KETO//OS NAT

Exogenous ketones can work like the body’s own ketones – and achieve the same positive effects for performance and health as the ketosis triggered by a keto diet. However, for this to happen, the exogenous ketones have to be in a form the body can use. This bioavailability is one of the special product characteristics of KETO//OS NAT, the exogenous ketones from Prüvit.

Exogenous ketones with excellent bioavailability

KETO//OS NAT, the exogenous ketones from Prüvit, are embedded in a complex of active ingredients that is easy for the human body to absorb. Thanks to this process, which is protected by several patents, almost all the exogenous ketones in KETO//OS NAT are metabolised. Prüvit says the bioavailability level is 95%.

The history of exogenous ketones

Development of exogenous ketones began in the 1920s. Dr Russell Wilder and Dr Mynie Petermann, doctors at the famous Mayo Clinic in Cleveland (USA), discovered that low-carb diets increased the concentration of ketone bodies in the blood. At the same time, they noticed that a keto diet (see also: The keto diet & ketosis) reduced the number of seizures in epilepsy patients. That was the start of research into the keto diet – and later into exogenous ketones.

Exogenous ketones are becoming increasingly popular

The keto diet and the ketone effect have attracted more and more publicity over recent years. Many people have had positive experiences with diets that restrict carbohydrates, including the Atkins diet, low-carb diets and paleo diets. In the USA and Australia in particular, many people have been following the even stricter keto diet for years. It is here especially that the use of exogenous ketones has become increasingly popular. And now they have crossed the pond: the exogenous ketones in KETO//OS NAT first became available in Europe in June 2020.

Exogenous ketones: The components of KETO//OS NAT

The most important ingredient of KETO//OS NAT is the bioidentical ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). KETO//OS NAT from Prüvit contains beta-hydroxybutyrate with exactly the same chemical structure as the beta-hydroxybutyrate that is produced by the liver when it burns body fat or dietary fat. This is what gives the exogenous ketones in KETO//OS NAT their particularly high level of bioavailability.

The exogenous ketones in KETO//OS NAT are ketone salts, in which beta-hydroxybutyrate is bound to a particularly well-balanced combination of sodium, calcium and magnesium. The proportion of sodium is somewhat higher because ketones bound to sodium enter the bloodstream quickly. Calcium and magnesium are absorbed more slowly, so contribute to sustained ketone utilisation.

Exogenous ketones without synthetic bulking agents or auxiliary substances

KETO//OS NAT does not contain any synthetic bulking agents or auxiliary substances. The flavours of the different products come from natural essential oils and plant extracts. And the colours are based on fruit and vegetable extracts. All products are available with or without caffeine, which also comes from natural sources. The stimulating effect of caffeine can support the effect of exogenous ketones.

In addition to beta-hydroxybutyrate, KETO//OS NAT contains minerals, medicinal plants, amino acids, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and a special complex of active ingredients: C-MED-100.

C-MED-100 with cat’s claw

Unlike other exogenous ketone supplements, KETO//OS NAT contains the C-MED-100 complex as well as BHB. The main components are extracts of cat’s claw, a medicinal plant from South America. Cat’s claw has been used in traditional medicine for over 2,000 years. It is said to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral and immune-stimulating effects.

In many cases, the traditional uses of cat’s claw stand up to scientific scrutiny. The Deutsche Apotheker Zeitung (DAZ), a German pharmaceutical journal, says the anti-inflammatory properties of cat’s claw are generally recognised. Cat’s claw also appears to have soothing properties for joint troubles. According to the DAZ, a study found it had pain-relieving properties and reduced morning joint stiffness. One cat’s claw product has been approved in Austria as a pharmacy-only drug for rheumatoid arthritis.

In studies using human cells, US researchers were able to show that cat’s claw has the ability to improve the cells’ own mechanisms for repairing DNA structures and to improve signalling between genes.

Dosage – Taking KETO//OS NAT

KETO//OS NAT comes as a powder in sachets. One sachet of powder should be dissolved in 500 to 1000 ml of still water (depending on sweetness). It can then be sipped throughout the day.

Ideally, don’t drink more than 200 ml in one go because otherwise your body will excrete the ketone bodies without absorbing them. Exogenous ketones stimulate your metabolism. So it is important that you also drink plenty of fluids – ideally still water. As a rule of thumb, you should drink at least the same amount of fluid again as you take in the form of the ketone drink, but ideally 2 litres per day. If you are sensitive to caffeine, make sure you don’t take the ketone drink too late in the afternoon.

Start slowly

You should build up the dose of exogenous ketones slowly because otherwise they can cause diarrhoea in some people. We recommend the following plan:

  • Days 1 and 2: ¼ sachet in the morning and ¼ sachet in the afternoon, or before 7 pm
  • Day 3: ½ sachet in the morning and ½ in the afternoon
  • Day 4 onwards: 1 sachet (whenever feels best)

In the event of gastrointestinal problems, stay on the starting dose for a week and then slowly build it up again until you are happy with it.

A higher dose of 1 sachet twice a day can be helpful in cases of serious neurological disorders or fatigue.

More about exegenous ketones

  • What is ketosis?
The ketogenic diet leads to ketosis. It meets the body’s energy requirements primarily through fat, which causes the body to switch to fat metabolism. Ketosis gets its name from ketones (ketone bodies), which replace sugar (glucose) as the main source of energy. Here we explain how it works.
  • The effect of exogenous ketones
The benefits of a ketogenic diet come primarily from the effect of ketones, of which the most important is beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Studies confirm the great health benefits of BHB.
