FAQ – Exogenous ketones

Here you will find answers to common questions about exogenous ketones and the ketogenic diet.

FAQ: The keto diet and ketosis

What is a keto diet?

A keto diet, or ketogenic diet, is one that is consistently very low in carbohydrates. The maximum is around 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. By way of comparison, a portion of wholemeal pasta (100 grams) contains 60 grams of carbohydrates – and is therefore already three times more than the total daily amount for a keto diet. In other words, following a keto diet means cutting out carbohydrates almost completely.

What is ketosis?

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body obtains nutrients and energy primarily from fat. This happens whenever the body can no longer obtain the energy it needs from carbohydrates (and the sugars they turn into). Ketosis is therefore the metabolic process in which the cells’ energy is obtained from fat burning and from the resulting ketone bodies. The human body enters ketosis when its energy metabolism uses ketone bodies as the main fuel source.

What is ketosis?

What is fat metabolism?

Fat metabolism is how our cells obtain energy from fat, the most important energy reserve. But fat does much more than this. Many people are not aware that fat is not just a source of energy. Fats contain essential fatty acids that the human body cannot produce by itself. In addition, the body needs fatty acids to produce other substances, including hormones. It is only the fat that the body cannot use immediately that is stored in fat cells.

FAQ – Exogenous ketones

What are ketones?

Ketones or ketone bodies are the metabolites from which the body derives energy during ketosis, or fat metabolism (i.e. when there is a shortage of sugar), in order to supply the brain, organs and muscles. The ketone bodies that are produced naturally during ketosis are called endogenous ketones. Exogenous ketones are taken in the form of e.g. food supplements.

What is ketosis?

How do ketones work?

Beta-hydroxybutyrate is a reliable source of energy for the body – whether it comes from a keto diet (endogenous ketones) or from food supplements (exogenous ketones). Ketones offer at least two benefits over sugar-based energy. Firstly, ketones supply the body with energy without the negative side effects associated with sugar metabolism. Secondly, ketones remain in the blood for longer than sugars. This means they provide the body with energy over a longer period of time – wherever it is needed.

  The ketone effects

Is there scientific evidence for the effect of exogenous ketones?

The health benefits of a keto diet and exogenous ketones have been investigated in a number of scientific studies. It has been found, for instance, that beta-hydroxybutyrate can have a positive effect on inflammatory diseases like atherosclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. A keto diet is also an effective option in the treatment of diabetes. In addition, it appears that exogenous ketones can lower high blood pressure, and they support weight loss by suppressing appetite.

Are exogenous ketones really a miracle cure?

Exogenous ketone supplements are often marketed as a panacea. They are said to be able to melt off excess pounds in no time, take body and mind to new levels and heal chronic diseases. It’s not quite that simple. Diet and exogenous ketones have been shown to contribute to greater health, vitality and enjoyment of life, but don’t expect miracles. Exogenous ketones are an extremely versatile food supplement, but they are not medicines or remedies.

  The ketone effects

What are ketone esters?

Ketone esters consist of a ketone body that is attached to a ketone precursor like butanediol or glycol. They are used primarily by elite athletes and are said to be effective at supplying the muscles with energy over a sustained period. Only a few keto drinks containing ketone esters are available at the moment. This is likely to be in part because of the high cost, and partly because the products available at the moment taste strongly of solvents.

What is ketosis?

What are ketone salts?

In ketone salts, the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is bound to a mineral – generally to sodium, calcium or magnesium. Food supplements containing ketone salts usually come in powder form and are dissolved in water to make a drink. The exogenous ketones sold by Orthoformula (KETO//OS NAT) bind beta-hydroxybutyrate to a particularly well-balanced combination of sodium, calcium and magnesium. The proportion of sodium is somewhat higher because ketones bound to sodium enter the bloodstream quickly. Calcium and magnesium are absorbed more slowly, so contribute to sustained ketone utilisation.

What are exogenous ketones?

Exogenous ketones are ketone bodies that come from external sources, e.g. in the form of food supplements like KETO//OS NAT. They trigger a form of ketosis in the body without the need to follow a ketogenic diet.
